Iran pauses in aluminum production expansion

According to Iranian state-owned metallurgical holding Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO), in 1402 local calendar, which ended on March 19, 2024, aluminum production in the country amounted to 635 thousand tons, which is only 1% higher than the previous period.

Four companies produce aluminum in Iran: South Aluminum Corporation (SALCO), Iranian Aluminum Company (IRALCO), Almahdi Aluminum Company and Iran Alumina Company. In March 2024 (calendar year), they collectively produced 52.8kt of aluminum compared to 54.9kt in February.

Some of the decline was due to the New Year holidays on the local calendar, as well as due to restrictions on electricity supply. The shortage of energy and gas is the main constraint for the development of Iranian industry.

According to IMIDRO, the country’s aluminum production added 17.4% in the previous year according to the local calendar. And in the current year, which will end in March 2025, it is expected to resume growth to 1 million tons with further reaching the level of 1.5 million tons per year due to the commissioning of new capacities.
